Olympian Inspiration

by Lisa Golebieski, M.S.

If you have been watching the 2014 Winter Olympics, you’ll see thousands of athletes…..and what you might notice is that they are the epitome of health and fitness (besides their occasional injuries).  Let them inspire us as role models of a healthy weight and fit body.  While most of us are not training to be in the Olympics we can emulate their motivation to exercise and eat pure whole foods to fuel our bodies which is essential to overall good health.

Incorporate power protein foods, energizing salads and vitamin boosting smoothies.  When making decisions about what to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner….choose the protein over the carbs, pick a healthy salad instead of greasy fried appetizers and try a smoothie for breakfast instead of a bowl of cereal.  Changing up just one meal per day can make a positive impact.

Most of us feel like there is not enough time in our day to exercise.  We are so busy with work, families, chores, etc…but let’s put ourselves FIRST for a change and find at least 15 to 30 minutes a day to be active.  Olympians make fitness a priority, let’s also try to put exercise on the upper part of our to do lists.  Remember it’s our bodies that carry us through the journey of life and we need to make sure it’s going to be in the healthiest condition possible for longevity.

Our bodies are like a machine that must be tuned and maintained to run properly.  Our organs, cells, muscles, bones and tissues are the moving parts that must carefully be taken care of from the inside out.  Body awareness is very important….take a few minutes to look at your skin, your arms, legs, stomach, chest, etc….feel your heart beating, your lungs working to breathe in and out…..it’s an amazing process that doesn’t require us to control….yet what we eat and how active we are can substantially affect these functions viable to life itself.

Olympic athletes are very in tune to their bodies and its functions….they must rely on their health and well-being for top performance.   Let’s also make our health a top priority to be the best at what we do every day.  A healthy body gives us energy, clearer thinking and the power to perform at work, at home, with family, friends and hobbies.   This all helps us be in a happier mood……when we attain our goals and enjoy our accomplishments, it’s a win win!  Healthy body, happy mind!

Go for the GOLD in health…..for life!
