Learning to Eat Healthy

by Lisa Golebieski, M.S.

We all want a quick fix for weight control these days.  Instant gratification….wanting it right now!  When it comes to weight, the best most successful way to reach our goals is to learn how to eat healthy.

What do I mean by that?

Well, some commercial diet plans make you eat their pre-packaged foods to control calories, fat intake, etc….While these are okay for the short term, they do not help for a lifetime of weight control.  Do you really want to buy packaged diet food for the rest of your life?  Probably not!

Learning to eat real healthy food for a lifetime is the only way we will stay at a normal weight for our height and body type.  Reaching out to a Nutritionist/Dietitian who can teach, coach and support healthy food changes in your diet has the most success.

I’ve seen it time and again how people start off on a commercial diet plan and then fall off of it because they are tired of eating what “the plan” wants them to eat or because they lost the weight they wanted and are done paying the weekly/monthly fees (if applicable) associated with it.

Afterwards they are left in the cold not knowing what foods they should cook or consume on their own.  They go back to their old ways of eating and then before you know it all the weight is gained back…..thus causing the client to come back on the plan once again to lose the weight they regained.    The commercial plans create a cycle of business to keep their customers.

There are also fad diets (like Slim Fast, cookie diet, soup diet, eggs diet, grapefruit diet, etc…there just might be hundreds of them!)  We are not programmed to eat the same exact foods every single day….it’s just not in our DNA.  This is why fad diets often fail as well.   Eating a variety of healthy foods from all the food groups are what satisfies our hunger and balances our nutrient consumption.

We must break that cycle and learn how to eat real food, cook healthy dishes and have fun creating recipes that we will all enjoy eating.  We have such an intimate relationship with food (read my Blog entitled “Being Intimate With Your Food”) and we must consume only the best most nutritious kinds for our body to keep it healthy and maintain a normal weight.

Let’s stop the fad diets, commercial diet plans and let’s start a way of life that involves learning to eat the way our bodies were meant to be nourished.

Reach out to a new way of managing weight…..you’ll be in control of your health for a lifetime.
